My name is / I ask for the moon
Video, 59′, 2017
Women and men, they come from Afghanistan, Mali, Nigeria, Sudan, Chad.
They have fled a dictatorship, a war, or what remains unimaginable to us.
Over a period of four months, they learn French
at the Thot school, a diploma-granting French school for refugees
and asylum seekers. During these four months as well,
Manuela Morgaine – Envers Compagnie, in collaboration with Lucile Latour,
welcomed them to the Forum des Images to create a film.
Facing the camera, each of them wrote and recited a story in their mother tongue.
“My name is,” followed by the speaker’s first name, are the opening words
that unlock their story. It carries no subtitles, yet is illuminated by
archives offered to them or chosen by their own hand.
French, the host tongue, is spoken at the close to
translate for us a fragment of their tale.
“I ask for the moon” are the final words uttered
by each of them, like a vital yearning for an Horizon.
