ADIEU
A one-word film
In production: Envers Compagnie & Utopie Films
Featuring Clotilde Courau

ADIEU is inspired by a Balzac novella written in 1830,
under the shock of the Napoleonic Wars (in particular the episode
of the Crossing of the Berezina), their traumatic tales,
and the first emergence in France, around the same era,
of "feral children", young creatures adrift in distress,
often naked, bereft of speech, upon whom physicians
attempted experiments in civilizing.
A burning passion, amidst the heart of the Russian Campaign.
And then everything ceases. The man, years later,
will reenact the battle so that the woman he loved
in the core of this war, now turned wild child
– uttering only that single word, Adieu, repeated in echolalia –,
might recognize him, and unfold her tongue once more
beyond this sole word that kills her.
Frozen Memory – essay published in Nouvelle Revue de Psychanalyse, 1990.
GO
Ciné-concert – Version for Venice
In 1756, at thirty-two years of age, Casanova escapes from the Piombi prison in Venice.
At sixty-two, in the French tongue, he recounts the tale.
An escape re-composed from whole cloth by a libertine watching his life unspool once more.
Va plays within this deferred, reimagined time.
Escape plan through words (the actor)
then through sounds (the Foley artist).
Tragicomedy of a solitary man replaying his life.
Va is a performance or ciné-concert.
